In Alabama, the law views aggravated cruelty to animals as a serious offense. Under Section 13A-11-14 of the Alabama Code, a person commits the crime of cruelty to animals if they intentionally or recklessly subject any animal to cruel mistreatment, or neglect any animal in their custody, thereby causing unjustifiable pain, suffering, or death. The law stipulates that this offense is a Class A misdemeanor.

Aggravated cruelty, on the other hand, involves more extreme forms of animal abuse. This can include torture, mutilation, intentional killing, or inflicting serious physical injury to an animal. Aggravated cruelty to animals is considered a Class C felony under Alabama law. Conviction can result in a prison sentence of 1 to 10 years, a fine, or both.
