Penalties for Street Racing

There are a number of grave penalties for a conviction of street racing in Alabama:

  • For a first conviction, the defendant is fined $500 and can be imprisoned for anywhere from 5 to 90 days. This usually is a suspended sentence with 30 days of probation.
  • For a second conviction, the fine is increased to $3,000 and a suspended sentence of anywhere from 10 days to 6 months, with 30 days of probation.
  • For a third conviction or any after that, there is a $6,000 and a suspended sentence of 1 year in jail and a year of probation.
  • Any conviction will also lead to your driver’s license being suspended for a minimum of 6 months, or even having it revoked.

These are not penalties to be taken lightly. Act in your best interest now by hiring a qualified defense attorney in The Stoves Law Firm.

What are the Best Defenses to Street Racing Cases?

  • Lack of Evidence: The prosecution must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that you were involved in a street race. If the evidence is insufficient, it can lead to a dismissal of charges.
  • Mistaken Identity: It’s possible you were wrongfully identified as a participant in the race. We can challenge this assertion and seek to have your charges dropped.
  • Procedural Violations: If any step during your arrest or subsequent procedures was mishandled, it can be grounds for dismissing the charges.
